A desk mat lives right where your hands, drinks and snacks are, so it picks up dust, crumbs and the occasional spill. The good news is that a fabric desk mat is easy to look after. This guide covers what to do every week, how to deal with spills, and the mistakes that shorten a mat’s life.
Know what your desk mat is made of
DeskCart mats have a printed fabric surface, a natural anti-skid rubber base and stitched edges. Our care instruction is simple: wipe with a damp cloth and let it air dry flat. Everything below builds on that.
Everyday care: 2 minutes a week
- Shake or brush off loose dust and crumbs, away from your keyboard.
- Wipe the surface with a soft, lint-free cloth that is only slightly damp.
- Wipe the desk under the mat too. Dust trapped beneath is what makes a mat slide or look dull.
- Keep drinks to one side of the mat, not above your keyboard.
Removing spills and stains
- Act quickly. Blot the spill with a dry cloth or tissue. Press, don’t rub, so the liquid doesn’t spread into the fabric.
- Use mild soap if needed. Dampen a cloth with water and a tiny drop of mild soap, and dab the mark gently.
- Rinse the cloth and wipe again with plain water to remove soap residue.
- Test first. Try any cleaner on a corner of the mat before using it on the artwork.
Drying it properly
Lay the mat flat, print side up, in a well-ventilated spot. Keep it out of direct sun and away from heaters, because heat can damage the rubber base. Don’t roll or fold it while it is still damp, and don’t put it back on the desk until it is fully dry.
What to avoid
- Soaking or machine washing. Our guidance is wipe-clean only, so we don’t recommend it.
- Hot water, bleach or strong cleaners. They can harm the rubber base and wear the printed surface.
- Hard scrubbing. A gentle wipe is enough. Scrubbing roughens fabric.
- Hairdryers and radiators. Let it air dry.
How often should you clean it?
A light wipe once a week is plenty for most desks. Give it a slightly deeper clean once a month, or straight after any spill. If you eat at your desk, wipe more often.
When is it time to replace it?
A mat that is looked after can last a long time. Consider replacing it if the stitched edges start to fray badly, the rubber base is peeling, or the mat no longer lies flat.
Quick answers
Can I put my desk mat in the washing machine?
We don’t recommend it. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth and air dry it flat.
Will cleaning fade the print?
The print is made to be fade-resistant, but any printed fabric can wear if you scrub it hard or use strong chemicals. Gentle wiping keeps the artwork looking its best.
Why does my mat slide?
Usually dust or damp on the desk or the rubber base. Wipe both with a dry cloth and try again. If your mat is much bigger than your desk, our desk mat size guide can help you choose a better fit.
